Time-Based SQL Injection in WP2LEADS WordPress Plugin

Vulnerability report for CVE-2025-9462, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

The WP2LEADS plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the β€˜order’ parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.5.6 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The WP2LEADS WordPress plugin has a SQL injection vulnerability in versions up to 3.5.6. It occurs via the 'order' parameter due to insufficient input escaping and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor WordPress logs for unusual database queries or errors. Check for requests with the 'order' parameter containing SQL syntax like UNION, SELECT, or other SQL keywords. Use tools like WP Security Audit Log or query WordPress database logs for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. This could lead to further attacks like account takeovers or data breaches. The vulnerability requires only Subscriber-level access, making it easier for attackers to exploit.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and exposure of personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage if such a breach occurs due to insufficient security measures.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the WP2LEADS plugin to the latest version if an update is available to patch the SQL injection vulnerability.
  • Restrict user roles with Subscriber-level access or higher to minimize potential attack vectors.
  • Monitor database queries and server logs for unusual activity, especially those involving the 'order' parameter.
  • Implement a web application firewall (WAF) to help block SQL injection attempts targeting the 'order' parameter.
