Description

The NewStatPress plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'QUERY_STRING / REQUEST_URI' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that an administrator has placed the [NewStatPress type="Top Pages"] shortcode on a publicly viewable page, and that the attacker's crafted URL accumulates enough hits to appear in the top-N ranking.

Executive Summary

The NewStatPress WordPress plugin up to version 1.4.5 has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. Attackers can inject malicious scripts via the QUERY_STRING or REQUEST_URI parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. These scripts execute when users visit the compromised page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the NewStatPress plugin up to version 1.4.5 for the presence of the [NewStatPress type="Top Pages"] shortcode on public pages. Inspect server logs for unusual QUERY_STRING or REQUEST_URI parameters containing script tags or obfuscated JavaScript.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that run in users' browsers, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting to malicious sites, or performing actions on behalf of users. Requires an administrator to have placed a specific shortcode on a public page and the attacker's URL to accumulate enough hits.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized script execution on websites using the NewStatPress plugin, potentially enabling attackers to steal sensitive user data or manipulate page content. For GDPR, this may result in unauthorized data processing or breaches, risking non-compliance with data protection requirements. HIPAA-covered entities using this plugin could face risks of unauthorized access to protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the NewStatPress plugin to the latest version beyond 1.4.5 immediately. Remove the [NewStatPress type="Top Pages"] shortcode from any publicly accessible pages. Review and sanitize server logs for signs of exploitation.
