Description

The Directorist: AI-Powered Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'phone' Listing Field in all versions up to, and including, 8.10.2.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is possible because the plugin grants the edit_at_biz_dirs and publish_at_biz_dirs capabilities to the subscriber role, allowing any subscriber-level user to submit and publish listings without moderation.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Directorist WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages via the 'phone' listing field. The issue arises because the plugin does not properly sanitize input or escape output, enabling script execution when users view the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Directorist plugin versions up to 8.10.2.1. Inspect listings for injected scripts in the phone field. Use Wordfence or similar security plugins to scan for stored XSS patterns.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. It may also enable further attacks like phishing or malware distribution. Users with subscriber access can publish listings without moderation, increasing the risk of widespread exploitation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising user data and violating privacy regulations like GDPR or HIPAA. Stored XSS may expose sensitive information, leading to non-compliance with data protection requirements, potential fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Directorist plugin to the latest version. Remove subscriber-level capabilities to edit or publish listings. Implement input sanitization for phone fields in listings.
