Reflected XSS in Tutor LMS WordPress Plugin

Description

The Tutor LMS – eLearning and online course solution plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via the 'tab' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. Exploitation requires the targeted lesson page to have an empty nav-items array β€” a condition that occurs naturally when a lesson has no post content, no attachments, and comments are disabled or the viewer is not logged in β€” which bypasses the in_array() tab validation and allows the raw attacker-controlled value to reach the sink.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'tab' parameter, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts. The attack requires tricking a user into clicking a link, and exploitation is possible when a lesson page has no content, attachments, or comments, bypassing validation.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using Tutor LMS plugin versions up to 4.1.0. Check for reflected XSS via the 'tab' parameter in lesson pages. Look for pages with empty nav-items arrays. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for vulnerable endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, perform actions on behalf of users, or deface websites. Users might unknowingly execute malicious scripts, leading to data theft or unauthorized access. The impact depends on user privileges and the plugin's usage.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may risk protected health information exposure. Compliance depends on the organization's data handling and breach response measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Tutor LMS plugin to the latest version beyond 4.1.0. If updating is not possible, disable the plugin temporarily. Implement a web application firewall to block malicious requests. Monitor for unusual activity in lesson pages.
