Time-Based SQL Injection in WordPress Newsletters Plugin

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-101325, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

The Newsletters plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'id' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.18.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. An attacker can obtain the required nonce and subscriberauth cookie without a WordPress account by simply subscribing through the public newsletter form and opening the management link sent via email; the ownership check verifies only the subscriber_id field and does not validate that the injected id parameter belongs to the authenticated subscriber.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The Newsletters plugin for WordPress has a SQL Injection vulnerability in versions up to 4.18.1. The flaw exists in the 'id' parameter due to insufficient input escaping and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites running the Newsletters plugin versions up to 4.18.1. Check for unusual SQL query patterns or unauthorized data access attempts in server logs. Use tools like WP-CLI to list installed plugins and verify versions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker can exploit this to steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. They only need subscriber-level access, which can be obtained by subscribing via the public newsletter form and using the management link sent via email.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to data breaches resulting from this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Newsletters plugin to the latest version. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Review database access logs for suspicious activity and restrict subscriber-level permissions to minimize attack surface.
