Description

The The Ninja Forms – Contact Form Builder with Calculators, Quizzes, Signatures & AI Form Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary shortcode execution in all versions up to, and including, 3.15.5 This is due to the software allowing users to execute an action that does not properly validate a value before running do_shortcode. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to execute arbitrary shortcodes. Exploitation requires that an administrator has configured at least one Ninja Forms field with its Default Value set to the {wp:user_display_name} merge tag on a publicly accessible page; a Subscriber need only set their display_name to a shortcode string via their profile and then visit that page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to execute arbitrary shortcodes in the Ninja Forms WordPress plugin. It occurs because the plugin does not properly validate user input before running do_shortcode, enabling code execution if an administrator has set a specific merge tag in a form field.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites running Ninja Forms versions up to 3.15.5. Look for fields with Default Value set to {wp:user_display_name} on public pages. Inspect user profiles for modified display names containing shortcode strings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to run malicious code on your WordPress site, potentially leading to unauthorized actions, data theft, or site defacement. The attack requires specific conditions: an admin must have configured a form field with a default value using the {wp:user_display_name} merge tag, and the attacker must set their display name to a shortcode string.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, non-compliance penalties, or loss of trust in handling sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Ninja Forms plugin to the latest version beyond 3.15.5. Remove or modify any Ninja Forms fields using {wp:user_display_name} merge tags. Review user profiles to ensure display names do not contain executable shortcodes.
