Executive Summary

This is a Heap-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the eventd component of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. An unprivileged local attacker can exploit it by sending crafted IPC event messages, leading to a denial of service or privilege escalation to root.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in eventd of Juniper Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. Detection requires checking for unusual eventd process behavior or crashes. Monitor logs for eventd-related errors or segmentation faults. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive | match eventd' to check eventd status and 'show log messages | match eventd' to review eventd logs for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could cause system crashes or gain full control of the device, compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system and its data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling unauthorized privilege escalation to root via crafted IPC event messages, potentially leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data. A successful exploit may allow attackers to bypass security controls, compromising data confidentiality and integrity required by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks immediately. Disable unnecessary IPC event messaging services if possible. Monitor system logs for unusual activity related to eventd processes.
