Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Integer Underflow (Wrap or Wraparound) flaw in the srxpfe component of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved running on SRX Series devices. It allows an adjacent unauthenticated attacker to disrupt network traffic by sending a specially crafted ICMP message linked to an SVR carrier session, causing a denial of service on the forwarding plane.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring for abnormal ICMP traffic patterns or crashes in the srxpfe process on SRX Series devices. Juniper recommends checking logs for ICMP messages associated with SVR carrier sessions and verifying the integrity of the forwarding plane. Use 'show system processes extensive | match srxpfe' to check process health and 'show log messages | match ICMP' to inspect ICMP traffic.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could cause network outages or degraded performance on affected Juniper SRX Series devices. It may lead to loss of connectivity, interrupted services, or reduced network reliability for users relying on these systems.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability causes a forwarding-plane denial of service via ICMP messages, which could disrupt network availability. This may impact compliance with GDPR (availability principle) and HIPAA (security rule for integrity and availability) by compromising system uptime and data accessibility.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the Integer Underflow vulnerability in srxpfe. Monitor Juniper's security advisories for updates and consider disabling ICMP messages associated with SVR carrier sessions if not required.
