Executive Summary

This is a NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an unauthenticated configured BGP peer to cause a denial of service by sending a BGP UPDATE message when ISO-VPN and egress-protection configurations are enabled.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the rpd routing daemon on Juniper devices with ISO-VPN and egress-protection enabled. Check logs for BGP UPDATE-related crashes or segmentation faults in rpd. Juniper recommends monitoring system logs and using the 'show system processes extensive' command to detect daemon crashes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the rpd routing daemon, leading to network disruption and loss of routing functionality. This may cause downtime for affected systems and services relying on BGP routing.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability causes a denial of service via a BGP UPDATE when specific configurations are enabled, which could disrupt network services. This may impact compliance with standards requiring availability of systems, such as GDPR's data integrity requirements or HIPAA's access controls, by potentially leading to service unavailability.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable ISO-VPN and egress-protection configuration if enabled. Update Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved to a patched version. Monitor BGP UPDATE messages for unusual activity.
