CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Integer Overflow or Wraparound issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It occurs in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) and can be triggered by specially crafted EVPN route updates from an accepted EVPN BGP peer. This causes a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) on Juniper Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved systems. Check logs for EVPN route update processing errors or unexpected terminations. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive | match rpd' to verify rpd status and 'show log messages | match rpd' to review relevant logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to disrupt network services by causing a denial of service. This may lead to network outages or degraded performance for affected systems running vulnerable versions of Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via crafted EVPN route updates, which could disrupt network availability. Disruptions may impact systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating availability requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. However, the CVE does not provide specific compliance implications.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the Integer Overflow issue in the routing protocol daemon (rpd). Monitor BGP EVPN route updates from trusted peers for unusual activity.
