CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Integer Overflow or Wraparound issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It occurs in the rpd process and can be exploited by a remote attacker with an established EVPN BGP peering relationship. The attacker sends specially crafted EVPN BGP routes to cause a denial of service by disrupting control-plane adjacencies in EVPN-enabled routing instances.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Juniper Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved with EVPN BGP peering enabled. Detection requires checking for rpd process crashes or control-plane disruptions in EVPN-enabled routing instances. Monitor logs for BGP route processing errors or unexpected rpd restarts. Juniper recommends inspecting BGP EVPN route advertisements for malformed or excessive routes that may trigger the overflow.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can cause a denial of service by disrupting control-plane adjacencies. This may lead to network outages, loss of connectivity, or degraded performance in affected Juniper devices running Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved with EVPN enabled.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by causing disruptions in network availability and control-plane operations. A denial of service via EVPN BGP route processing may lead to unauthorized access or data processing interruptions, potentially violating availability requirements in these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the Integer Overflow issue in the rpd process handling EVPN BGP routes.
