Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a NULL Pointer Dereference in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows a remote unauthenticated BGP peer to cause a denial of service by sending a specific BGP FlowSpec update to an affected BGP session.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) after receiving BGP FlowSpec updates. Check logs for segmentation faults or core dumps in rpd processes. Juniper recommends enabling detailed logging for BGP sessions and inspecting traffic patterns for malformed FlowSpec updates.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service, disrupting network services and potentially leading to downtime for systems relying on the affected Juniper devices.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via a NULL Pointer Dereference in the BGP FlowSpec update handling. While it does not directly impact data confidentiality or integrity, prolonged service disruption could affect availability of critical network services, potentially violating compliance requirements for uptime and reliability in standards like GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd).

Disable BGP FlowSpec sessions if not required, as the vulnerability is triggered by a specific BGP FlowSpec update.

Monitor BGP sessions for unusual activity or crashes in the rpd process, which may indicate exploitation attempts.
