Executive Summary

This is a NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an unauthenticated remote BGP neighbor to cause a denial of service by sending a VPN-flowspec BGP update that is readvertised while BMP post-policy RIB-out monitoring is enabled.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for BGP neighbor issues and BMP monitoring configuration. Inspect BGP sessions for unexpected disconnections or crashes. Review routing protocol daemon logs for NULL pointer dereference errors. Verify if BMP post-policy RIB-out monitoring is enabled on affected Junos OS versions.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to a denial of service, causing network disruption or outages. It may affect routing stability and availability of Juniper devices running vulnerable Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via a NULL Pointer Dereference in Juniper Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved when specific BGP updates are processed. This could lead to service disruption, potentially impacting data availability and integrity, which are critical for compliance with standards like GDPR and HIPAA that require continuous access to personal or health data.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd). Disable BMP post-policy RIB-out monitoring if configured and avoid readvertising VPN-flowspec BGP updates from untrusted neighbors.
