Description

An Improper Validation of Consistency within Input vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows a configured BGP ISO-VPN peer to cause an rpd crash by sending a specific ISO-VPN update which is then processed by BMP route monitoring or NSR.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Improper Validation of Consistency within Input issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows a configured BGP ISO-VPN peer to crash the routing protocol daemon (rpd) by sending a specific ISO-VPN update. The update is then processed by BMP route monitoring or NSR, leading to the crash.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for rpd crashes or unexpected behavior in Juniper Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved systems configured with BGP ISO-VPN peers. Check logs for BMP route monitoring or NSR-related errors. Juniper recommends inspecting BGP ISO-VPN update processing and ensuring rpd stability.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause the rpd to crash, disrupting routing services and potentially leading to network outages or instability. It may affect BGP ISO-VPN peers and services relying on BMP route monitoring or NSR.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it pertains to a network routing protocol issue rather than data protection or privacy. However, if the affected systems process or transmit regulated data, service disruption from an rpd crash could indirectly affect availability requirements under these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the improper validation issue in the routing protocol daemon (rpd). Monitor BGP ISO-VPN peers for unexpected updates and disable BMP route monitoring or NSR if not required.
