Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in the UTM Anti-Spam SBL of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX series. It allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service by sending a malformed DNS packet when Anti-Spam SBL inspection is enabled.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring for malformed DNS packets when Anti-Spam SBL inspection is enabled on Juniper SRX devices. Check Juniper's official advisories for specific IDS/IPS signatures or SNMP traps related to this CVE. Enable detailed logging on SRX series devices and inspect DNS traffic for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to arbitrary code execution or denial of service attacks. An attacker could exploit it to take control of affected systems, disrupt services, or steal sensitive data if Anti-Spam SBL inspection is enabled on the device.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution or denial of service, potentially compromising data confidentiality and availability. Such impacts may violate GDPR's integrity and availability principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable Anti-Spam SBL inspection on affected Juniper Networks Junos OS SRX series devices to prevent exploitation via malformed DNS packets.
