Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reachable Assertion issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an adjacent attacker to crash the routing protocol daemon (rpd) by sending a specially crafted LDP packet over an established LDP session.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for rpd crashes or unusual LDP packet handling. Check logs for rpd crashes and inspect LDP session traffic for malformed packets. Juniper recommends enabling logging and monitoring for LDP sessions and rpd stability.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause the rpd to crash, leading to a denial of service (DoS) condition. This disrupts network routing and may result in loss of connectivity or network instability for affected systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes an rpd crash via crafted LDP packets, leading to service disruption. Such disruptions may impact data availability and integrity, which are critical for compliance with GDPR and HIPAA. However, specific compliance impacts are not detailed in the provided CVE data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved to the latest patched version to address the Reachable Assertion vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd).
