Executive Summary

This is an OS Command Injection vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved. It exists in the zero-touch provisioning daemon called bootzd. An unauthenticated attacker on the management LAN can exploit crafted DHCP responses to execute commands as the root user.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring DHCP responses on the management LAN for crafted packets targeting the bootzd daemon. Inspect DHCP server logs for malformed options or unexpected payloads. Check Junos OS Evolved logs for bootzd-related anomalies or root command execution attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control over the affected system by executing arbitrary commands with root privileges. This could lead to complete compromise of the device, data theft, unauthorized access, or disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary commands as root via crafted DHCP responses, potentially leading to full system compromise. Such unauthorized access could result in unauthorized data access, modification, or exfiltration, which may violate GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) requirements for access controls and data integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Juniper Networks to address the OS Command Injection vulnerability in the bootzd zero-touch provisioning daemon. Isolate affected systems on the management LAN to limit exposure. Monitor network traffic for unusual DHCP responses or unauthorized command execution attempts.
