Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Improper Input Validation issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It occurs in the rpd process and allows an unauthenticated adjacent attacker to cause a denial of service by sending a malformed PIM Hello message to an IPv6-enabled PIM interface.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for malformed PIM Hello messages on IPv6-enabled PIM interfaces. Check Junos OS logs for rpd process crashes or errors related to PIM processing. Use commands like 'show log messages | match rpd' or 'show system processes extensive | match rpd' to identify crashes. Monitor network traffic for unusual PIM protocol activity on IPv6 interfaces.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to a denial of service, disrupting network services and causing downtime. It requires an attacker to be adjacent to the target system, meaning they must be on the same local network.

Compliance Impact

The provided CVE data does not specify direct impacts on compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA. The vulnerability causes denial of service via malformed PIM Hello messages, which may disrupt network services but does not explicitly mention data protection or privacy violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the improper input validation in the rpd process handling PIM Hello messages.
