CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Use After Free issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved platforms. It occurs during rpd PIM Join/Prune processing when sparse mode PIM is configured. An unauthenticated adjacent attacker can exploit this by sending specific PIM messages, causing the routing daemon to crash.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved platforms with sparse mode PIM configured. Detection requires checking for crashes in the routing daemon (rpd) due to PIM Join/Prune processing. Monitor logs for rpd crashes or unusual PIM message handling. Juniper may provide specific diagnostic commands in their security advisories, but none are provided here.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial of service by crashing the routing daemon, disrupting network traffic and services. It requires an adjacent attacker, meaning they must be on the same local network segment to exploit it.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards as it pertains to network routing infrastructure rather than data handling or privacy controls. Compliance risks would arise only if the vulnerability leads to service disruption or unauthorized access, which is not specified here.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable sparse mode PIM on affected Juniper Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved devices to prevent exploitation. Apply the latest security patches from Juniper Networks as soon as they become available.
