CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This is an Integer Overflow or Wraparound vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It affects the routing protocol daemon (rpd) and can be exploited by an unauthenticated adjacent attacker sending specific OSPFv2 packets on an OSPF-enabled interface. This causes a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for unexpected OSPFv2 packet processing failures or crashes in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) on Juniper Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved devices. Check logs for rpd crashes or error messages related to OSPFv2 packet handling. Juniper recommends inspecting OSPFv2 packet captures for malformed or unusually large packets that could trigger an integer overflow.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to a denial of service, disrupting network routing and causing connectivity issues. If exploited, it may result in network outages or degraded performance for affected systems running vulnerable versions of Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via OSPFv2 packets, which could disrupt network availability. For GDPR, availability is a key principle, so prolonged outages may impact compliance. HIPAA requires network integrity and availability for protected health information systems; disruptions could risk compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the Integer Overflow or Wraparound vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd).
