Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Improper Validation of Specified Quantity in Input issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an adjacent OSPF peer to either disclose memory from the rpd process or cause it to crash by sending malformed OSPF packets.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for malformed OSPF packets or rpd crashes. Check Juniper device logs for OSPF packet processing errors or unexpected rpd restarts. Use commands like 'show ospf neighbor' to verify OSPF adjacencies and 'show system processes extensive | match rpd' to monitor rpd status.

Impact Analysis

An attacker within the same network segment could exploit this to crash the routing process (rpd) on affected devices, leading to network disruption or potential information disclosure from memory.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows an adjacent OSPF peer to disclose rpd memory or cause a rpd crash via malformed OSPF packets. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data or service disruption, potentially violating data protection requirements in GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the OSPF packet validation issue. Monitor rpd process logs for crashes or memory disclosures. Isolate affected systems from untrusted OSPF peers until patched.
