Executive Summary

This is a NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows a configured external BGP (eBGP) peer to cause a persistent denial of service in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) by sending a specific BGP packet when ephemeral configuration is used.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) on Juniper Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved systems. Check logs for rpd crashes or core dumps after BGP packet processing. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive', 'show log messages', or 'show log chassisd' to identify issues. Monitor BGP session stability with 'show bgp summary'.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the routing daemon, causing network outages or instability. This disrupts routing services and may lead to loss of connectivity for affected systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service in routing protocols, which could disrupt network availability. While not directly tied to data privacy, prolonged outages may impact systems handling regulated data, potentially violating availability requirements in standards like GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd). Disable eBGP peering sessions until the update is applied.
