Executive Summary

This is a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows a network attacker with SNMP read access to execute code with root privileges or cause a denial of service by sending a specific SNMP packet when SNMP and AAA are enabled.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking if SNMP and AAA are enabled on Juniper Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved systems. Monitor for unusual SNMP traffic or crashes. Juniper recommends reviewing logs for authd-related errors or unexpected behavior.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain root-level access to your system, allowing them to take full control. They could also disrupt services by causing a denial of service, leading to downtime and potential loss of critical network functions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote code execution with root privileges via SNMP, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This may violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Disable SNMP read access if not required.
  • Disable AAA if SNMP is not needed.
  • Apply patches or updates from Juniper Networks.
  • Restrict SNMP access to trusted sources only.
