Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved routing protocol daemon (rpd). It occurs when an unauthenticated adjacent LDP peer sends a malformed Label Mapping message, causing a crash or allowing arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for malformed LDP Label Mapping messages or rpd crashes. Check Juniper device logs for rpd crashes or unexpected behavior. Use network monitoring tools to inspect LDP traffic for malformed packets. Juniper may provide specific detection commands in their security advisories.

Impact Analysis

An attacker within the local network could exploit this to crash the rpd service or execute malicious code, leading to service disruption or unauthorized system access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized code execution or service disruption, potentially causing data breaches or loss of sensitive information. Such incidents may violate compliance requirements under GDPR or HIPAA, depending on the affected system's role in processing protected data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved to the latest patched versions immediately to address the stack-based buffer overflow in the routing protocol daemon (rpd). Disable LDP peering with untrusted adjacent peers until patches are applied.
