Executive Summary

This is a NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It affects the routing protocol daemon (rpd) and can be triggered by unauthenticated adjacent attackers sending LDP messages over an operational LDP session. This causes a denial of service by crashing the rpd process.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) on Juniper devices. Check logs for segmentation faults or core dumps related to LDP sessions. Use commands like 'show system core-dumps' or 'show log messages' to identify crashes. Monitor network traffic for malformed LDP messages that may trigger the issue.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to disrupt network routing services, leading to service outages or degraded performance. Since it requires an adjacent attacker, the impact is limited to networks where the attacker has local access to the LDP session.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via LDP messages, which could disrupt network services. Disruptions may impact systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating compliance requirements for availability in standards like GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd).
