Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reachable Assertion issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved routing protocol daemon (rpd). It allows an adjacent eBGP peer to trigger a denial of service by sending a VPLS signaling update when automatic site-ID negotiation is enabled.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for unexpected rpd crashes or high CPU usage on Juniper devices running affected Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved versions with automatic site-ID negotiation enabled. Check logs for VPLS signaling update errors or reachable assertion failures in the routing protocol daemon.

Impact Analysis

An attacker in the same network could exploit this to cause your Juniper device to crash or become unresponsive, disrupting network services and potentially leading to downtime.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via a VPLS signaling update, which could disrupt network availability. Disruptions may impact systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating compliance requirements for availability in standards like GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable automatic site-ID negotiation in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) configuration to prevent the vulnerability from being triggered by eBGP peers.
