Executive Summary

This is a Reachable Assertion vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos EVO. An adjacent attacker can exploit it by sending a specific IPv6 Prefix FEC in a Label message over an established LDP session, causing a denial of service by crashing the rpd process.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for unexpected crashes or high CPU usage in the rpd process on Juniper devices. Check for LDP sessions carrying IPv6 Prefix FEC in Label messages. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive', 'show ldp session', and 'show log messages' to inspect for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows an attacker to disrupt network services by causing the rpd process to crash, leading to a denial of service. This can interrupt routing and forwarding functions, affecting network availability.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via an established LDP session, which could disrupt network availability. Such disruptions may impact systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating compliance requirements for availability in standards like GDPR and HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Junos OS or Junos EVO to the latest patched version to address the Reachable Assertion vulnerability in the rpd process.
