Executive Summary

This is a Reachable Assertion vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos EVO. It exists in the rpd process and can be triggered by LDP control traffic sent by an adjacent unauthenticated attacker. This causes a denial of service condition.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the rpd process handling LDP traffic. Check system logs for assertion failures or core dumps related to rpd. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive' to monitor rpd stability and 'show log messages | match rpd' to inspect relevant logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker within the same network segment could exploit this to crash the rpd process, leading to network disruption or outages for affected Juniper devices running vulnerable Junos OS or Junos EVO versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via LDP control traffic, which could disrupt network services. Such disruptions may impact compliance with standards like GDPR (availability requirements) or HIPAA (system reliability for healthcare data).

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos EVO security patches from Juniper Networks immediately. Monitor LDP control traffic for unusual patterns and restrict adjacent network access to LDP ports.
