Executive Summary

This is a Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS's authd process. It allows an attacker who can influence a configured RADIUS server to crash authd or execute code with root privileges by sending a malicious RADIUS response.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a stack-based buffer overflow in the authd process of Juniper Networks Junos OS due to malicious RADIUS responses. Detection requires monitoring for authd crashes or unusual behavior when RADIUS servers are queried. Check system logs for authd crashes or segmentation faults. Monitor network traffic for malformed RADIUS packets using tools like tcpdump or Wireshark. Ensure Junos OS is updated to the latest version to mitigate the risk.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause system crashes or gain full control of the device with root privileges, potentially leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows remote code execution with root privileges via a malicious RADIUS response, which could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches. This may impact compliance with GDPR by risking unauthorized data access or processing, and with HIPAA by potentially exposing protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS security patches from Juniper Networks immediately. Disable RADIUS authentication if not required or restrict access to trusted RADIUS servers only. Monitor authd process logs for crashes or unusual activity.
