Executive Summary

This is a Heap-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in Juniper Networks' secure-dot1xd process affecting Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. An unauthenticated attacker on the same network can exploit it by sending a specially crafted EAPOL frame to an 802.1X-authenticated interface, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution as root or a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in the secure-dot1xd process of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. Detection requires monitoring for unusual activity on 802.1X-authenticated interfaces. Check logs for EAPOL frame processing errors or crashes in the secure-dot1xd process. Use commands like show log messages | match secure-dot1xd or show system processes extensive | match secure-dot1xd to identify anomalies.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain root access to your Juniper device, allowing full control over the system. Alternatively, they could crash the device, causing network downtime and disrupting services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote code execution or denial of service via network access, which could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion. Such impacts may violate GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Juniper Networks for Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved to address the heap-based buffer overflow in the secure-dot1xd process. Disable 802.1X authentication on affected interfaces if immediate patching is not possible.
