CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This is an Integer Overflow or Wraparound vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved routing daemon (rpd). It occurs when an authenticated BGP peer sends route updates with extended-nexthop-tunnel enabled, causing a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking if the routing daemon (rpd) is running with extended-nexthop-tunnel enabled and monitoring for crashes or high CPU usage during BGP route updates. No specific commands are provided in the CVE details.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the routing daemon, disrupting network traffic and causing service outages. This affects network stability and availability for affected Juniper devices.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via BGP route updates, which could disrupt network availability. Disruptions may impact systems handling sensitive data, potentially violating availability requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. However, the CVE does not provide specific compliance implications.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the extended-nexthop-tunnel feature if enabled. Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks. Monitor BGP route updates for unusual activity.
