Executive Summary

This is a NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an unauthenticated configured MSDP peer or adjacent PIM sender to cause a denial of service by exploiting an MSDP or PIM policy that uses AS-path expansion.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or abnormal behavior in the routing protocol daemon (rpd) on Juniper devices. Check logs for MSDP or PIM policy-related errors. Use commands like 'show log messages' or 'show system processes extensive' to identify rpd crashes or high CPU usage. Monitor network traffic for unexpected MSDP or PIM packets that may trigger the issue.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the routing protocol daemon (rpd), leading to network disruption or outages. This could affect routing stability and availability of network services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via MSDP or PIM policy misconfiguration, leading to service disruption. Such disruptions may impact data availability, which is critical for compliance with GDPR (data availability requirements) and HIPAA (availability of protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved security patches from Juniper Networks to address the NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the routing protocol daemon (rpd). Disable MSDP or PIM policies that use AS-path expansion if not required. Monitor network traffic for unusual activity related to MSDP or PIM protocols.
