Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Improper Validation of Specified Quantity in Input issue in the l2ald component of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an adjacent attacker to send a malformed ICCP MC-LAG message that causes a denial of service by exploiting insufficient input validation.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring for abnormal ICCP MC-LAG message handling in l2ald on Juniper devices. Check logs for l2ald crashes or unexpected behavior. Juniper recommends inspecting network traffic for malformed ICCP messages targeting MC-LAG. Use 'show system processes extensive | match l2ald' to verify l2ald status and 'show log messages | last 50' to review recent errors.

Impact Analysis

An attacker within the same network segment could exploit this flaw to disrupt network services by triggering a denial of service condition, potentially leading to network outages or degraded performance for affected Juniper devices running vulnerable Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved versions.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability causes a denial of service via an ICCP MC-LAG message, which could disrupt network services. This may impact compliance with standards requiring high availability, such as GDPR's data processing requirements or HIPAA's access controls, by potentially leading to service unavailability.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Juniper Networks for Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved to address the improper validation in l2ald. Monitor Juniper's security advisories for updates and disable ICCP MC-LAG if not required.
