Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reachable Assertion issue in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It exists in the l2ald daemon and can be triggered by an attacker with access to a configured ICCP peer sending a malformed MC-LAG message. This causes a denial of service condition.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves a Reachable Assertion in the l2ald daemon due to malformed MC-LAG messages. Detection requires monitoring for unexpected crashes or abnormal behavior in the l2ald process on Juniper devices running affected Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved versions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the l2ald daemon, leading to network disruption. This affects systems using Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved with ICCP peer configurations, potentially causing service outages.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability causes a denial of service via malformed messages, which could disrupt network availability. This may impact compliance with standards requiring high availability, such as GDPR (availability principle) or HIPAA (accessibility of critical systems).

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Juniper Networks to address the Reachable Assertion vulnerability in the l2ald daemon. Disable ICCP peer configurations if not required. Monitor network traffic for malformed MC-LAG messages and restrict access to ICCP peers.
