CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an Integer Overflow or Wraparound issue in the l2ald process of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows a configured EVPN BGP peer to cause a denial of service by sending EVPN Type-2 MAC/IP routes.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring for crashes or high CPU usage in the l2ald process on Juniper devices running affected Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved versions. Check logs for EVPN Type-2 MAC/IP route processing errors or unexpected process terminations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this flaw to disrupt network services by causing the l2ald process to fail, leading to a denial of service. This could affect network availability and performance.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via EVPN Type-2 MAC/IP routes, which could disrupt network services. Such disruptions may lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, potentially violating GDPR's availability principle or HIPAA's integrity and availability requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the Integer Overflow in the l2ald process. Monitor EVPN Type-2 MAC/IP routes for unusual activity and restrict BGP peer configurations to trusted sources.
