Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an XML Injection flaw in the Unified Threat Management daemon (utmd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series devices. An unauthenticated network attacker can exploit it by sending a malicious response from a configured custom URL-feed server, allowing them to commit arbitrary device configuration with root privileges.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized configuration changes or suspicious network activity involving the utmd service. Monitor logs for unexpected XML parsing errors or configuration commits from untrusted sources. Inspect network traffic for unusual connections to custom URL-feed servers.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control over the affected Juniper device, modify its configuration, and potentially disrupt network operations. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or denial of service if the attacker manipulates security policies or system settings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to modify device configurations with root privileges, potentially compromising data integrity and confidentiality. Such unauthorized access could violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable custom URL-feed server configurations on SRX Series devices and update Junos OS to the latest patched version to prevent XML injection via utmd.
