Executive Summary

This is a Reachable Assertion vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows a configured BGP-LS peer to cause a denial of service by sending a BGP-LS update that triggers an assertion failure in the rpd process.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring the rpd process for crashes or abnormal behavior after receiving BGP-LS updates. Check logs for assertion failures in the BGP-LS subsystem. Juniper recommends enabling detailed logging for the rpd process and monitoring system stability during BGP-LS peer interactions.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause a denial of service, leading to network disruption or outages. Systems running affected Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved versions may become unresponsive or crash when processing malicious BGP-LS updates.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service via BGP-LS updates, which could disrupt network availability. Such disruptions may impact compliance with standards requiring continuous availability, such as HIPAA for healthcare systems or GDPR for data processing operations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediate mitigation steps include disabling BGP-LS peering sessions with untrusted peers and applying Junos OS patches from Juniper Networks. Monitor rpd process logs for crashes or abnormal termination.
