Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved's l2cpd process. It occurs when processing LLDP traffic on an interface with Unified Access Policy enabled. An adjacent unauthenticated attacker can exploit this to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code with root privileges.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires monitoring for crashes or unusual behavior in the l2cpd process on Juniper devices with Unified Access Policy enabled. Check logs for LLDP-related crashes or root-level code execution attempts. Juniper may provide specific detection tools or updates.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could crash your system (denial of service) or take full control of it (arbitrary code execution with root privileges) by sending specially crafted LLDP traffic to an affected interface. This could disrupt network operations or lead to unauthorized system access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote code execution with root privileges, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This may violate GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable Unified Access Policy on interfaces receiving LLDP traffic or upgrade to a patched version of Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved. Monitor for unusual l2cpd process behavior or crashes.
