Executive Summary

This is an Out-of-bounds Read vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an unauthenticated attacker on the same network to crash the cfmd process and potentially access limited process memory by sending a specific CFM Message to a configured interface.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for crashes in the cfmd process or unusual CFM message traffic. Check system logs for cfmd crashes or memory disclosures. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive | match cfmd' to monitor cfmd status. Inspect network traffic for malformed CFM messages targeting configured interfaces.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause denial of service by crashing the cfmd process. It may also expose limited process memory, potentially leaking sensitive information. Since it requires an adjacent network attacker, local network access is needed for exploitation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by potentially exposing limited process memory, which could lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information. The out-of-bounds read flaw allows attackers to crash the cfmd process and access memory, posing risks to data confidentiality required by these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest security patches from Juniper Networks to update Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved. Disable CFM on affected interfaces if not required. Monitor cfmd process crashes and restrict adjacent-network access to configured interfaces.
