Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in the jdhcpd process of Juniper Networks Junos OS. An unauthenticated attacker on the same network can exploit it by sending a malicious DHCP client response, causing a denial of service. This disrupts DHCP operations and related services like DHCP relay and zero-touch-provisioning.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring the jdhcpd process for crashes or abnormal behavior. Check system logs for DHCP-related errors or service interruptions. Use commands like 'show system processes extensive | match jdhcpd' to monitor the process and 'show log messages | match jdhcpd' to review logs for crashes.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause service disruptions by crashing the jdhcpd process, leading to downtime for DHCP, relay, and zero-touch-provisioning services. This may result in network connectivity issues for devices relying on DHCP for IP address assignment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by disrupting DHCP services, which may lead to network downtime or unauthorized access. Downtime could affect data processing systems, potentially violating availability requirements under GDPR Article 32 or HIPAA Security Rule standards for reliable access to protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS security patch from Juniper Networks to address the jdhcpd buffer overflow vulnerability. Disable DHCP client services if not required and monitor for unusual DHCP client responses.
