Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Reachable Assertion flaw in the bfdd daemon of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. An unauthenticated attacker on the same network segment can exploit it by sending specially crafted BFD session traffic, causing the daemon to restart and leading to a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring the bfdd daemon for crashes or unexpected restarts. Check system logs for bfdd-related errors or core dumps. Use commands like 'show system processes | match bfdd' to verify if the daemon is running. Monitor network traffic for crafted BFD session packets that may trigger the issue.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can disrupt network services by repeatedly restarting the bfdd daemon, which may cause intermittent connectivity issues or complete loss of BFD functionality. This impacts systems relying on BFD for session monitoring and failover.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the bfdd daemon, which could disrupt network services. Such disruptions may lead to violations of availability requirements in GDPR or HIPAA, potentially impacting compliance if critical systems are affected.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved patches from Juniper Networks to address the bfdd daemon vulnerability. Monitor BFD session traffic for unusual patterns that may indicate exploitation attempts.
