Description

A Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the phone-home daemon (phcd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved allows an adjacent unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code as root via a crafted DHCP SZTP bootstrap message. This issue only affects platforms that support Secure-ZTP.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in the phone-home daemon (phcd) of Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. It allows an adjacent unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code as root by sending a specially crafted DHCP SZTP bootstrap message. The issue only affects systems that support Secure-ZTP.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the presence of the phone-home daemon (phcd) on Juniper Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved systems that support Secure-ZTP. Inspect running processes for phcd and verify if the system is configured to receive DHCP SZTP bootstrap messages. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full control over affected systems, leading to potential data breaches, system compromise, or disruption of services. Since the attacker can execute code as root, they may install malware, steal sensitive data, or pivot to other systems in the network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote code execution as root via crafted DHCP messages, which could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or system compromise. Such impacts may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data security) by exposing sensitive information or failing to maintain system integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable Secure-ZTP on affected Juniper Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved devices to prevent exploitation via crafted DHCP SZTP bootstrap messages.
