Description

A Stack-based Buffer Overflow vulnerability in the dot1x daemon of Juniper Networks Junos OS devices operating as Junos Fusion Aggregation Devices allows an adjacent attacker acting as the configured ICCP peer to cause a denial of service and potentially execute code as root via. The issue is triggered when dot1x synchronization is enabled for the required Fusion satellite topology.

Executive Summary

This is a stack-based buffer overflow in the dot1x daemon of Juniper Networks Junos OS devices operating as Junos Fusion Aggregation Devices. It allows an adjacent attacker acting as the configured ICCP peer to cause a denial of service and potentially execute code as root when dot1x synchronization is enabled for the required Fusion satellite topology.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for vulnerable Junos OS versions running as Junos Fusion Aggregation Devices with dot1x synchronization enabled. Inspect device configurations for 'set protocols dot1x' and 'set chassis satellite-management' commands. Monitor for crashes or unusual behavior in the dot1x daemon.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the device, disrupt network operations, or gain root-level access, leading to potential data breaches, unauthorized control, or service outages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality, potentially resulting in legal penalties or compliance violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable dot1x synchronization for Fusion satellite topology if enabled. Update Junos OS to the latest patched version. Restrict network access to ICCP peers to trusted adjacent systems only.
