Description

A Use After Free vulnerability in the packet forwarding engine (pfe) of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS). When web filtering for TCP traffic is configured, a high volume of DNS requests increases the likelihood of a flowd crash and restart, which leads to a complete service outage until the service has automatically recovered. This is a race condition outside the attacker's direct control. This issue affects Junos OS on SRX Series: * All versions before 23.2R2-S5; * from 23.4 before 23.4R2-S6; * from 24.2 before 24.2R2-S3; * from 24.4 before 24.4R2-S1; * from 25.2 before 25.2R1-S1, 25.2R2.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a Use After Free vulnerability in Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series. It allows an unauthenticated attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service by exploiting a race condition when web filtering for TCP traffic is configured and a high volume of DNS requests triggers a flowd crash and restart.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series with web filtering for TCP traffic enabled. Detection requires checking Junos OS version against affected releases and monitoring for flowd crashes or service outages.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can lead to a complete service outage on affected SRX Series devices until the flowd service automatically recovers. This disrupts network operations and requires manual intervention or waiting for recovery.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a Denial-of-Service (DoS) by crashing the flowd service, leading to a complete service outage until recovery. Such outages can disrupt access to critical systems, potentially violating compliance requirements for availability under standards like GDPR and HIPAA, which mandate continuous access to personal and health data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Junos OS on SRX Series to a fixed version: 23.2R2-S5 or later, 23.4R2-S6 or later, 24.2R2-S3 or later, 24.4R2-S1 or later, or 25.2R1-S1/R2 or later. Disable web filtering for TCP traffic if configured to reduce the risk of flowd crashes.
