Description

A NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the DNS plugin of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a complete Denial-of-Service (DoS). When multiple DNS queries are received in a single flow session, where one query matches a Security Intelligence (SecIntel) feed and another query is sent for DNS Domain Generation Algorithm (DGA) analysis, an error in processing logging of these asynchronous tasks can lead to an FPC crash. The exact timing conditions are outside an attacker's direct control. This issue affects Junos OS on SRX Series: * All versions before 23.2R2-S7.7; * from 23.4 before 23.4R2-S8.13; * from 24.2 before 24.2R2-S5.5; * from 24.4 before 24.4R2-S4; * from 25.2 before 25.2R2-S1; * from 25.4 before 25.4R1-S2.

Executive Summary

This is a NULL Pointer Dereference vulnerability in the DNS plugin of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series. It allows an unauthenticated, network-based attacker to cause a complete Denial-of-Service (DoS) by triggering an error in processing logging of asynchronous DNS query tasks. The issue occurs when multiple DNS queries are received in a single flow session, with one matching a Security Intelligence feed and another for DNS Domain Generation Algorithm analysis.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the Junos OS version on SRX Series devices. If the version is before 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S4, 25.2R2-S1, or 25.4R1-S2, the system is affected. Use the command 'show version' to check the current version.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause a complete Denial-of-Service (DoS) by crashing the Flexible PIC Concentrator (FPC) on affected Juniper Networks Junos OS SRX Series devices. This results in network downtime and loss of service for users relying on these devices.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a Denial-of-Service (DoS) condition by crashing the FPC, which could disrupt network services. For compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA, such disruptions may lead to service unavailability, potential data processing delays, or breaches of availability requirements. However, the provided CVE details do not explicitly link this issue to specific compliance impacts.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Junos OS on SRX Series devices to a version that is not affected by this vulnerability. Affected versions include those before 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S4, 25.2R2-S1, and 25.4R1-S2. Apply the latest patches as soon as possible.
