Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in the iked IKE key-management daemon of Juniper Networks Junos OS on the SRX Series. It allows an authenticated remote-access VPN client to execute code with root privileges or cause denial of service via the remote-access VPN authentication and JIMS identity-publishing path.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for vulnerable versions of Junos OS on SRX Series devices. Use the command 'show version' on the device to verify the Junos OS version. If the version is affected, update to a patched version immediately.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain root access on the affected system or crash the device, leading to service disruption. This could compromise sensitive data or allow unauthorized network access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated remote-access VPN clients to execute code with root privileges or cause denial of service, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information security) by enabling data breaches or unauthorized disclosure.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Junos OS security patches from Juniper Networks immediately. Disable the iked daemon if remote-access VPN is not required. Restrict VPN client access to trusted networks only.
