Executive Summary

This is a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Opengear IM72XX, CM71XX, and ACM70XX firmware versions 4.8.0 through 5.5.2. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit it by sending a specially crafted multipart/form-data POST request with an overly long Content-Disposition name field. This causes the index.cgi process to crash.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for crashes of the index.cgi process on Opengear IM72XX, CM71XX, or ACM70XX devices. Check logs for malformed multipart/form-data POST requests with overlong Content-Disposition name fields. Use network traffic analysis tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect HTTP POST requests targeting the vulnerable service.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the index.cgi process on affected Opengear console servers. This may lead to denial of service or potentially enable further attacks if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote code execution via a crafted request, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. For GDPR, this may result in data breaches requiring notification under Article 33. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information, violating the Security Rule. Affected organizations must assess impact and implement mitigations to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware of Opengear IM72XX, CM71XX, and ACM70XX devices to versions beyond 5.5.2. If an update is not immediately available, restrict network access to the index.cgi service using firewalls or disable the service if not required. Monitor vendor advisories for patches.
