Description

The Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'validate' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 10.8.0 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. AES-CTR is a malleable stream cipher, so an attacker who obtains one legitimate token by abandoning a cart with an email address they control can recover the keystream and forge a ciphertext carrying arbitrary SQL. The HMAC check added in 10.4.1 is enforced only when the wcap_nonce parameter is present, so omitting the parameter skips it entirely.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw in the Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress. It exists in versions up to 10.8.0 due to insufficient escaping of the 'validate' parameter and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Unauthenticated attackers can inject additional SQL queries to extract sensitive database information. The flaw also involves AES-CTR cipher malleability, allowing attackers to forge ciphertexts carrying arbitrary SQL if they control an email address used to abandon a cart.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugin versions for Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce. Look for unusual SQL query patterns in logs. Use tools like WP-CLI to inspect plugin files for the 'validate' parameter handling. Monitor database access logs for unexpected queries.

Impact Analysis

If you use the affected plugin, attackers could exploit this to steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as customer information, order details, or admin credentials. They could also manipulate data or take control of your site. The vulnerability requires no authentication, making it easier for attackers to target your site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. If customer data is exposed, it may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to non-compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Abandoned Cart Pro for WooCommerce plugin to version 10.8.1 or later immediately. Disable the plugin if an update is not available. Review database access logs for signs of exploitation. Consider temporary firewall rules to block suspicious SQL injection attempts.
