Vert.x WebSocket Zip Bomb DoS Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-102467, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-15

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

In Eclipse Vert.x versions [4.0.0, 4.5.34] or [5.0.0,5.0.12] or [5.1.0,5.1.9] or [5.2.0, 5.2.0], the WebSocket implementation does not define a maximum number of bytes allocation when decompressing frames or messages. This can be used to implement DDOS attacks with a zip bomb. The impacted component is io.vertx:vertx-core.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Eclipse Vert.x versions in specific ranges where the WebSocket implementation fails to set a maximum byte allocation limit during frame or message decompression. This oversight allows attackers to exploit the system using a zip bomb, a type of denial-of-service attack that sends compressed data which expands significantly when decompressed, potentially overwhelming system resources.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of io.vertx:vertx-core in use. If it falls within the ranges [4.0.0, 4.5.34], [5.0.0,5.0.12], [5.1.0,5.1.9], or [5.2.0, 5.2.0], the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'mvn dependency:tree' for Maven projects or 'gradle dependencies' for Gradle projects to inspect dependencies.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service attacks, causing system unavailability by consuming excessive memory and CPU resources during decompression of malicious zip bomb payloads. It can be exploited remotely without requiring authentication or user interaction, making it a significant risk for systems using affected Vert.x versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability by enabling denial-of-service attacks through zip bombs. While it does not directly affect data confidentiality or integrity, prolonged downtime could lead to violations of compliance requirements that mandate high availability for critical systems, such as those covered under GDPR for data processing or HIPAA for healthcare services.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade io.vertx:vertx-core to versions 4.5.35, 5.1.10, or 5.2.1 or later. If upgrading is not immediately possible, implement network-level protections such as rate limiting or WebSocket frame size restrictions to mitigate potential zip bomb attacks.
