HTTP Request Body Allocation DoS in Eclipse Vert.x

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-102475, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-15

Last updated on: 2026-10-15

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

In Eclipse Vert.x versions [5.0.0,5.0.12] or [5.1.0,5.1.9] or [5.2.0, 5.2.0], the HTTP proxy provides a body transformer interceptor that relies on a max buffered bytes limit to ensure a bounded buffer for each request. This can be used to force a server to indefinitely allocate heap. This vulnerability requires to use an intercepting body transformer. The impacted component is io.vertx:vertx-http-proxy.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Eclipse Vert.x HTTP proxy library. It involves a body transformer interceptor that fails to enforce a maximum buffered byte limit. Attackers can exploit this by sending requests that force the server to indefinitely allocate heap memory, leading to potential denial-of-service conditions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your system is running affected versions of Eclipse Vert.x (5.0.0-5.0.12, 5.1.0-5.1.9, or 5.2.0). Inspect network traffic for unusually large or malformed HTTP requests targeting the vertx-http-proxy component. Monitor server memory usage for unexpected spikes or sustained high allocation.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service attacks by exhausting server memory. It requires the use of an intercepting body transformer and can be exploited remotely without privileges or user interaction. Systems using affected Vert.x versions may experience crashes or degraded performance.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service conditions by exhausting server resources, which may impact availability of systems handling sensitive data. For GDPR, this could affect the right to access or availability of services. For HIPAA, it may disrupt access to protected health information systems.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to patched versions of Eclipse Vert.x (5.1.10 or 5.2.1 or later) immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable the HTTP proxy's body transformer interceptor or apply network-level protections to block malformed requests. Restrict access to the proxy endpoint if it is not required for operations.
